Abstract

This article aims to account a qualitative research developed in Región del Bío-Bío Chile, that pretends to investigate perceptions that high school students have about the Social Studies instruction they receive in their high schools, specially their perceptions about the objectives it follows, and their main demands about how their teachers teach them.

The qualitative study was carried out with male and female students from secondary schools of different levels and school dependence from the inter commune Concepcion-Talcahuano.

Outcomes showed that the students are not able to perceive clearly the objectives that the subject have in the school environment, making serious objections from what they do and receive inside of the classrooms from their teachers, most notably the excessive time taken to copy in the copybooks, lack of attention in their learning process, as well as the possibility to establish relations between different contents and their reality, and finally the lack of a method to help them to understand and relate various issues that are required to study.
