US MEDDLING IN LATIN AMERICA IN THE SPANISH TEAHING AND LEARNING OF HISTORY

Abstract

The article uses as source a doctoral research about the teaching and learning of imperialism to analyze the presentation of U.S. interventionism in Latin America in Spanish textbooks and the position of the students of the same nationality regarding this issue. The results indicate that the contemporary history of Latin America is presented in a disorganized way, minimizing the control of the northern power, avoiding problematic questions and the explanation of fundamental concepts such as intervention. The cases of Mexico, Cuba and Chile, the concept of interventionism and the Monroe Doctrine are specifically addressed. Finally we provide a series of educational proposals
